Where to buy

Where to buy local meat this week

Nobody in Haywood County needs to drive to Asheville for pasture-raised meat. The Saturday market in Waynesville runs April through December with county farms selling beef, pork, lamb, and chicken by the cut. A downtown butcher cuts Haywood-raised beef year-round. Everything on this page is within about twenty minutes of Waynesville.

Online ordering

  • MeatSuite

    Online (NC statewide)

Free bulk-meat directory built by Cornell and run in NC by NC Choices - around 300 NC farms listed, about 20% of them in WNC. Search by zip code to find farms selling wholes, halves, and quarters near Haywood County. Directory only: you buy direct from the farm.

Haywood County Extension actively pushes county farms to list here, so local coverage should keep growing. Bulk is the cheapest per-pound route to local meat.

  • WNC Farm to Table

    Online (WNC)

Online local-food marketplace whose farm lineup has included three area meat producers: Shady Brook Farm (Canton), Worley Farms (Canton), and Sunnybrook Farm (Sylva). Order online for pickup.

Exists but almost nobody knows about it - low consumer awareness. The marketplace URL from the 2026-08-02 research (wncfarmtotable.localfoodmarketplace.com) no longer resolves; wncfarmtotable.com now redirects to a store on csaware.com, so the platform appears to have moved and the farm lineup needs re-checking on the new store.

The next step

Buying for the freezer?

Everything above is the convenient way to buy. The cheap way is a share: a whole grass-fed beef averages $8.54 a pound in NC. That's ground-beef money for the ribeyes too. If you've got freezer room, or a neighbor to split with, that's where the real savings are.

Where these facts come from

Hours, season dates, payment programs, and market vendors come from each place's Appalachian Grown listing, or, for the downtown butcher, from its own website. The per-listing sources below link every one. Whole-beef average price: USDA AMS National Retail Report (NC listings). The twenty-minute framing tracks consumer research showing most people won't drive much farther than that for local meat: Journal of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Community Development.
